Bakary Sambe is a researcher at AKU-ISMC. His research project, African Islam: evolution, networks and impacts on social change, seeks to explore the process of Islamisation marked by the strong presence of the Sufi brotherhoods in Sub-Saharan Africa. After completing an MA in Arabic and Islamic Studies at Lumiere University (Lyon, France), Sambe completed his PhD in Political Science at the Institute of Politics Studies (IEP de Lyon) in 2003. His dissertation was entitled Islamic factor in Afro-Arab relations: roles of Sufi brotherhoods and Islamic movements. From 2003 to 2007, Sambe was a lecturer in Islamic Studies and Arabic Civilisation at Lumiere University in Lyon, France as well as in African Studies and Religious Ethnology at the International School for Trade and Development in Lyon. While preparing his PhD, he was a visiting scholar at The Institute of African Studies (Mohammed V University, Morocco). He is a member of the Association for the Study for the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA) in Washington DC, the Research Group on Morocco and Africa (GREMA) and an Associate Researcher of the Groupe de Recherches et d’Etudes sur la Mediterranee et le Moyen-Orient (France). In the summer 2008, Sambe was the representative for ‘religion and religiosities in African governance’ at the CODESRIA (Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa), Institute of African Governance. In July 2008 he was invited by the US Department of State to participate in the International Visitors Leadership Program about Islam and Managing Ethnic Diversity Issues
